Shard progress

Construction started in March 2009 on the Shard designed by Renzo Piano and is due for completion in 2012.

Construction started with the central core  but the work was completed on the lower floors as the core increased in height. The 72-storey central core was finished in December 2010 and is 244 metres high.

The Shard, London Bridge Station

The Shard building next to London Bridge Staion, is nearing completion. It already towers over the other buildings in the area. As constuction progressed, the tower gradually took shape. Taken on the same day, these two photographs show the building from two opposite direction. Above is the western and southern sides. Below is the view of the northern and eastern sides. Further pictures of the construction of the Shard can be seen on my set on Flickr.

The Shard, London Bridge, Jan. 2011

It was a sunny day so it was a good day to get some pictures of the Shard building being built at London Bridge. The central core was completed in December 2010.

The Shard under construction at London Bridge, Jan. 2011 - an alternative view

This is a curious juxtaposition between a building from the 19th century and a 21st century skyscraper under construction in Southwark in south London. The view is from Borough High Strret, outside the Post Office, close to London Bridge on the south sde of the Thames. The building in the foreground was part of the old St Thomas' Hospital before it moved to its current site further along the river in Waterloo. In the background is the central core of the Shard being built next to London Bridge station. Once complete the Shard will be encased in glass, but for the moment the concrete seems to match the stone of the older building.
